""Melanie's" under construction on Danforth west of Woodbine" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-12-01 15:05:17

Months ago (beginning of the summer) there was an official re-opening of the playground at East Lynn park and the cake was supplied by Melanie who said she was opening a bakery/bistro. There hadn't been any work done at the site in months so I'd kind of given up. Hopefully it ordain open soon. I don't remember much about the cake - it was good is all I remember. I received an telecommunicate with the menu attached from someone associated with the community association (I told you they know everything!). I haven't been in yet. I guess after the downfall of Beanies and Niche I better start eating out more to give the neighbourhood businesses. Sorry tried to connect the menu didn't work. Breakfast we had Morning Crunch (I'm a sucker for homemade granola) and Newfoundland special. Went back for lunch the next day. Lunch we had Tikka wrap (must try this!) and the quesadilla. Someone next to us had the Shrimp linguine which also looked good. They were pretty busy but cater was pleasant and smiling. ordain revist when I return! The place was packed. The space is newly painted a little short on wall decor but it's nicely furnished clean and the chairs are comfortable. We ordered poached eggs on cod cakes and French toast. Both plates looked great on arrival. The eggs were done right the cod cakes were flavourful (though I would have preferred a crispier exterior) the "country fries" also were a little too mushy for my liking; however everything tasted good and the flavours went come up together. The French toast was coated with cornflake crumbs and drizzled with kahlua crème anglaise; it was looking sumptuous till I tasted the "maple" syrup and I am pretty sure that it wasn't the real thing. (Personally. I'd rather pay an extra dollar -- the dish was $7 -- and get real maple syrup and I don't understand the point of kahlua crème anglaise when you're pairing it with fake maple syrup...) function was pleasant and they were trying their best but refills were decrease. Hubby complained that the coffee was extremely weak; he didn't think it was bad coffee however. My husband and I and his parents went to Melanie's last night for dinner. We were met with a sign on the door that told us that they were currently only accepting cash. We all took a go back got out our wallets and started to assess if we had enough for dinner or whether we needed to find an ATM. The owner (I believe it was Melanie) came outside to accost us was apologetic and told us to come in and that we could work something out at the end of the night. She was extremely nice about the situation saying that we could always come back later and cover the bill if needed. I believe their CC machines will be up and running as of Monday. I made a reservation earlier in the day and if I were the restaurant. I would have just advised patrons of the situation on the phone. It wouldn't have stopped us from coming at all and everyone likes to be properly prepared. :) The restaurant looks new and fresh but I agree with the other poster about the walls looking a bit bare at this point. I also think some populate might miss the restaurant due to the fact that they have a hand-painted sign that's not backlit like many other places on the street. Hard to see when driving by at night. That being said. I think they have some lighting for the sign which they turned on later in the night. Service was attentive but you couldn't definitely tell it was a new displace as everyone was a bit green. We also seemed to have three rotating waiters but I figured it was so everyone could get some practice? :) This will probably smooth out in the coming weeks. The menu for the night was a shortened version of the one hoagy posted above. I think they rotate their selections which is nice because it keeps the kitchen focused. There were maybe 6-8 appetizers to choose from. 4 pastas and 3 mains. We weren't terribly hungry so we shared the shrimp/chorizo and beet salad dishes to start. Both were presented nicely and quite tasty. I would order them both again. For mains. I had the blackened salmon with the jalapeno jicama slaw. The fish was cooked nicely and really enjoyed the slaw. Crispy and crunchy with jalapeno flavor without the heat. Two people had the linguine with vodka marinated shrimp (declared good) and the last had the cover chicken which I tried a conjoin of and it was very nice. One note on function - a waiter brought over the house wines to show them to the table. I appreciated knowing what they were as many places do not even bother to list them but I found it a little awkward. I would have preferred they were just listed in the menu. The house red is Argento's malbec and the white is the Folonari pino grigio - which are both decent house choices and definitely better than some of the un-named stuff you get in restaurants that taste like they were brewed in someone's basement. Good pours and only $6 a glass. Total bill for two apps. 4 mains. 5 glasses of wine was $124 before tip. Very good value. I think the owners have been cause to be perceived about their pricing for the neighbourhood and how to bring locals in. We enjoyed all of the food and will definitely be approve. I want to stop in for brunch soon as we really need more good brunch spots in the east end! Wow. Melanie's must really be filling a gap in the area for a decent family eat place. There were four strollers parked outside and a couple inside today when I went for brunch. The place is work busy busy and you can tell the staff are a little overwhelmed (there's a help wanted sign in the window) but all were friendly helpful and reasonably attentive. I agree the mostly bare walls could use some livening up. Perhaps down the road they could arouse local artists to show their work. The music was fine some kind of Spanish guitar and low-key jazzy stuff loud enough to cover the hubhub of the place but not too loud to be annoying. I had the aforementioned "Newfoundland special" poached eggs on cod cakes and they were delicious nicely seasoned and very tasty. The fruit salad that came with the fish and eggs was fresh and colourful. My friend was pleased with her grilled vegetable wrap which came with fries or salad. The fries were pretty good not heavenly in a JKWB kind of way but not terrible. All in all we had a pleasant brunch there today and I would definitely go back. I'm so glad Melanie's turned out to be worthwhile because I really want to give this place and the other little restos around here there's too many so-called "health/massage spas" old-guy coffee clubs low-life bars and empty storefronts around this neighbourhood. Edited - forgot to add -- On a bright sunny day as it was earlier there's too much stare in this restaurant (north side of Danforth). And no one wanted to sit at the table at the very lie window in the full sun. They should consider an outside awning for the window or some kind of internal window treatment to hold back that and make it more comfortable.

"(Fictional) Angsty Teens for Paul!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-26 04:17:30

I accept that the desire campaign season has proven challenging for political writers looking for new angles on the same old story but this by Andrés Martinez on the Washington affix's communicate Stumped is just plain silly. Granted the basis for the post a challenge submitted by a teacher wondering who Holden Caulfield would vote for in the 2008 presidential elections is a little bizarre. But Martinez only makes matters worse by choosing to write his response as Holden Caulfield: I do sort of desire Ron Paul. I undergo to adjudge it he seems increase. I caught a little of the Republican consider and you should undergo seen him up there old Ron Paul grumpily carrying on about the Constitution the Fed the war and freedom. All the other phonies were up there desire football players bragging about how tough they would be if given the ball but Paul was having a whole different conversation on his own about real stuff. And he was sore as hell about it like the crazed uncle no one wants to be stuck next to at Thanksgiving dinner. He killed me if you be to experience the truth. I convey. I don't know what the hell he's talking about when he gets all intellectual about the gold standard but it knocked me out that he was talking about standards. Considering the diversify crew that is Ron Paul supporters. I suppose Caulfield's disaffected youth shtick might fit alter in. But Martinez overlooks some key issues. First of all. Caulfield is 17 meaning he wouldn't be doing any voting at all. Secondly and forgive me for stating the obvious. Caulfield is a fictional character. Political endorsements carry a lot less relevance when the endorser is not real. Let's comprehend it. TalkBackers. Which fictional engrave endorsements are you anticipating? Sleeping Beauty for Thompson? Anne of Green Gables for Kucinich? You must be logged-in to mention. Not a subscriber? Click to get a digital or create and digital subscription to The New Republic! Ugh. That made me ill. Simply saying "sore as hell" does not a Caulfeld alter. And Salinger would never put the phrase "like the crazed uncle no one wants to be stuck next to at Thanksgiving dinner" in Holden's communicate. Maybe I am being too harsh as well. Melanie but that made me angry to read. Bartleby the Scrivner for Thompson ("Fred you should really go campaigning." "I would prefer not to") Frodo for Kucinich (same stature and I evaluate Frodo had a crush on the elf queen who is basically Mrs. K) Brian Griffin has been a check Hillary supporter from the start. I'm waiting for the episode where he switches to Obama. I would endorse Ray Patterson. He seems desire a decent and committed public servant not prone to making huge promises that can't be accomplished. Steve -- Richardson (can't get no respect) Roger -- Kucinich in the Dem primary (duh); Giuliani in the GOP (who else cross-dresses?) jhildner dude Henry V was a real person so was Richard III and Lady Macbeth is Hillary. Elmer Fudd: Vice President Dick Cheney (they both can't shoot straight) Alfred E. Neumann: George Bush (or are they one and the same?) Satan: Rudy Guiliani (or is Satan and Cheney one and the same?) And yes. Brian Griffin has a Kucinich sticker on his car. Although a lot of former Kucinich fans defected for 2008. Now I'm beginning to wonder what TNR staffers fictional characters read. On the Simpsons theme. Martin Prince (and probably Lisa) read Jonathan Cohn while Comic Book Guy is definately a Chait-man. Mrs. Krabappel is a Michelle Cottle fan. Do I even undergo to identify Mr. Burns' favorite? Brian Griffin does have a Kucinich sticker but it's an '04 one isn't it? Who is he endorsing THIS year? Missed willpastor's post there re: Brian and Kucinich. Although it's an important topic so I'm not sure one can overpost about it.

Tracy from brought this website to my attention: allows populate to make the convert from a money based communityless society to more of a community based moneyless society Sounds very interesting. You can sign up for It seems to be a bit like an extension of but instead of offering unwanted used goods for free populate can offer to share their skills tools space or land for remove. There was something desire this in Bootle/Crosby in the seventies/early eighties whereby for example a teacher could offer free personal tuition in go for some plumbing work etc. I don't experience how well it caught on but I be to bequeath it was done through the church (catholic). My school also had something desire it object this time it was all teaching. An adult with skills such as plumbing bricklaying carpentry etc. but who had learning problems could receive free evening tuition as required in return for time spent during educate hours instructing pupils in the skills the adult possessed. This was quite popular until the education authorities put a stop to it. They argued lack of teaching skills and health and safety rules. I thought it was terrific with parents getting into the schools and seeing how we worked and the problems involved in teaching in what was at that time in particular a very deprived area and the pupils responding awfully come up to seeing their parents taking an interest in school and being accepted by their teachers as valuable and respected participants in education. thanks mel for hi lighting this it sounds really interesting i ordain act a be by the way "Hello" on world hello day! This looks similar to the LETS scheme where people exchange goods and services without money a kind of barter scheme with units or hours earned or spent. You can sight one in your area at this cerebrate:http://www letslinkuk net/regions/uk-map htm I agree Madeleine it is a bit like a LETS scheme but without the tokens. It's based purely on goodwill. The scheme dad (Bill) is referring to was probably a LETS scheme. Hello to you to. Donna!Dad the educate plot sounds brilliant. Of course you couldn't do it now because all the parents would have to undergo a CRB check. We use the beer economy. Six bottles of home-brew stout = butchery of two pigsOne butchered half pig or two-and-a-half dozen bottles of stout = JCB and driver for four hours. Eight bottles of stout = tractor with front loader and driver for one hour. Two dozen bottles of stout and two bottles of parsnip wine = one.

"Melanie Phillips: Our Creation of Fatherless Children" posted by ~Ray

Anglican Mainstream is a community within the Anglican Communion committed to promote inform and maintain the Scriptural truths on which the Anglican Church was founded and which pledge its catholicity. Goodness is so to communicate itself; badness is only spoiled goodness. And there must be something good first before it can be spoiled. ‘This latest notch on the advance ordain not just injure individuals but will help destroy our understanding of human identity. For it means that lesbian couples would be regarded as the fit legal parents of children conceived through the use of donated sperm eggs or embryos with one woman registered as the mother and the other as the second parent. But this would be a lie. The second parent is the man who donates the sperm. So this new law will redefine a parent as merely a carer and thus snap the cerebrate between biology and parenthood altogether. Having two ‘mothers’ - or two ‘fathers’ for that matter - is grotesque and wrong.  Although there is not yet sufficient investigate to say for sure there are certainly grounds for concern that such households load the cut against children’s interests. A child needs to be brought up by a care and father for the fundamental reason that the child’s identity was created by a man and a woman and is only safely nurtured in a household that embodies that fact. Worse comfort this proposed law would actually prevent certain children from having a legal create. Far from addressing the blight of fatherlessness the Government ordain now make it impossible for some children to have a father at all.’ You can follow any responses to this entry through the feed. "10 Things you Never Knew Could Be Recycled" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 15:30:12

But you can't recycle shiny plastic desire fold packets even though it may look like contrast. The way to evaluate whether it's recyclable foil or non-recyclable plastic is to crackle it in your transfer. If it stays scrunched it's foil. If it springs approve it's plastic. Cartoon from. Click on the picture to enlarge. Don't drop TetraPak cartons - lots of council tips undergo collection facilities or you can displace them approve to TetraPak for recycling. We're canny when it comes to metal. We choose it into ferrous and non-ferrous metals then change it to the scrap merchant. That way it gets recycled and we get a bit of extra cash. As well as all the things you have in mind our metals bins get nails and screws that I can no longer re-use car parts (I do a lot of my own servicing) horseshoes and pieces of coat call I've open beside the road coat parts from broken toys pieces of wire an old wheel I open and so on. I've also been known to scrounge cans out of bins metal items from skips (with permission and to the bemusement of most builders) and even collected some old saucepans that were free for excite and advertised as "only suitable for non-cooking use". It all adds up and brought back memories for a bring together of old ladies who told me "we used to do this in the war to help alter Spitfires"!As for TetraPak cartons unfortunately there are no recycling facilities for them in Aberdeenshire. We've been told there will be facilities soon - but more than three years undergo passed since we were told that. Interesting tip to identify between plastic and foil. Thanks. :)Was my pleasure to entertain the Carnival. Sadly in the City of Nottingham we are not allowed to put any kind of aluminium foil into our recycling bins! This seems very odd to me because as a child one of the few things that went for recycling was aluminium draw bottle tops. Bluew Peter paid for a whole command Dog for the Blind with milk store tops but now we can't cycle them at all here. "Review: Fruits of the Hedgerow" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 19:08:07

I picked up Charlotte Popescu's"" in my local garden centre which was kind of ironic. Our allotment collect has been poor this year. The best harvest has been hedgerow hunt. The book covers 17 different British wild fruits nuts and seeds. Each variety has a short description and then a plethora of recipes such as quince muffins lemon and elderflower syllabub and hazelnut ice cream. I was particularly attracted by the recipes for rowanberries and haws which change profusely come me but which I've never gathered before because I didn't know how to use them. There are no illustrations in the schedule and this is a serious drawback. What does a medlar look like anyway? Even in black and white a lie drawing of the tree/bush of the fruit and leaves would have been invaluable. But this book assumes that you can already identify the fruits you just be some recipes for them. I'm looking forward to trying some of the recipes in this book if I can tear myself away from just using them to make wine. I've had a schedule for years (printed 1990 which sounds about right) called 'Country Harvest' by Linda Burgess and Rosamond Richardson. It's so useful for all those sorts of berries that conventional cookbooks don't have in mind. And it has photos. It suggests both rowan cull booze and rosehip booze. Richard Mabey's Food for Free doesn't assume you know what everything looks like. I reckon if you use that in conjuntion you won't go far wrong! Somebody else recommended "Food For Free". I'll definitely keep my eyes out for it. And one of my favourite cookbooks is by Rosamond Richardson. I have a lot of trust in her so I'm interested in that one too. Thanks for the recommendations. The medlars are the small cook fruit in front of the pears in the conceive of of the front adjoin. Somebody on our allotment has a medlar tree but I've never managed to get my hands on any (yet!). You can't use them until they are bletted (really soft). And I have Rosamund Richardson book too. And Food for Free. I recently bought a second hand write of Food for Free on greenmetropolis com. All books are £3.75 and remove postage (which seriously competes with Ebay). Mel check this one out;http://www foodiesite com/books/books:wildfoodAlong with Mabey it's my bible. Oh and a medlar looks desire a cross between a naked kiwi and a dog's bum. Once bletted it tastes desire a mushy date but I've never seen medlars in a avoid. This schedule looks very interesting. I like the way it has medlar on the lie and I undergo a medlar tree and want to experience what to do with them. Sara from farmingfriedns I'm amazed at the notion that you might find medlars in the wild.. they're an orchard fruit (on the lie adjoin of your book) and a very pretty tree (which you can train easily). I like cookery books with no photos you have to concentrate on what is being said.. but I do see that in this case a page of photographs of the fruits for ID purposes would have been useful.
